David Zwirner’s third location in Chelsea is an expansion of the gallery’s 19th street location – organized around the main, ground-level exhibition area with galleries and back-of-house spaces on the floors above.

At the entry and throughout the circulation spaces, recessed LED downlights and wallwashers provide even illumination, opening to the main 18½’ exhibition space with it’s large, north-facing sawtooth skylights. In the main galleries, recessed track with metal halide and halogen wallwashers provides two levels of additional electric light for cloudy days and nighttime illumination.

For the intimate gallery spaces, a tri-level lighting approach allows for options in showcasing different artworks under a variety of lighting conditions and combinations, offering maximum flexibility. A dramatic concrete stairwell connects the five floors of gallery space and is lit from above by a large skylight. Here, daylight is supplemented by LED strips underneath the floating stair, grazing soft light downwards. The gallery provides a unique art viewing opportunity with sustainability at heart, the first private gallery to attain LEED Gold certification in the US.
