Completed as part of the NYC Department of Design and Construction's Design Excellence program, the Staten Island Family Justice Center is an initiative of the Mayor's Office to Combat Domestic Abuse. The center provides a safe, caring environment for one-stop services and support to the local community and city at large.

With this in mind, RDG worked with Spacesmith to design a safe, dignified and welcoming environment that supports the project's goals. The space balances an abundance of natural light with energy efficient LED solutions in order to create clean, modern and contextually-appropriate spaces that still feel approachable and warm. Since the center employs police officers, therapists, social workers and even houses a DA's office, the lighting needed to adapt to a variety of uses. As a result, the center's multifunction training room, hospitality area and children's spaces were designed to be as flexible as possible while managing cost and maintaining environmental friendliness.
