The Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts is conceived as a laboratory for creative experimentation and collaboration, housing the University of Chicago’s visual arts, film, music, and theater programs under one roof. RDG approached the lighting to be both contemporary and flexible. Since the program accommodates activities as diverse as metal welding and music rehearsals, specific lighting solutions were required to maintain a cohesive image throughout the building.

Efficient general lighting techniques were applied to public, academic and studio spaces for effective and comfortable light levels while accent lights were used to highlight art installations and performance spaces where dramatic lighting was desired. Throughout, strategic custom lighting details reinforce the creative energy of the space.

At night, the building offers a glimpse of the creativity inside, exuding a warm, inviting glow while accentuating the architectural forms. Efficient long-life light sources and the building’s control system assist the Logan Center in attaining LEED Gold Certification.
